The third child of the noble Eltorchul house of Waterdeep, Gavin Eltorchul received training at the much vaunted Eltorchul Academy. Discovering his affinity for music early, Gavin’s father, Lord Thesp Eltorchul, soon saw fit to nurture his burgeoning talent under the tutelage of the best bard instructors the Academy had to offer. Unlike Gavin’s older siblings, Fea and Oth, Gavin found wandering and adventuring much more to his liking than the strictly regimented days of Academy study. He actually found more in common with Errya, the youngest daughter, although her skulking and menacing ways were usually at odds with his happy-go-lucky, care-free attitude.
Gavin quickly established himself as a notable performer, talented in song, on pipes, and with his weapon of choice, the whip. He played many taverns, drank and shared his earnings, and lived a lifestyle unattainable by many of his bard peers of less wealthy backgrounds. Through his generosity, he gained friends and followers alike, and in his heyday, there were few scoundrels in the Dock Ward that did not recognize his name. He gained some notoriety running with the Gemcloaks during this time.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck twice in Gavin’s childhood. Firstly, Oth, the heir of the Eltorchul family, was reduced to a babbling fool when the Eltorchul Academy was involved in creating the dream spheres of 1368 DR. Secondly, Errya fell in with Halaster’s Heirs, and disappeared, along with her consort, Brandon Korelwyn. Because of Gavin’s tendency to get into trouble, and general lack of discipline, Thesp Eltorchul and his consort Arus deemed their daughter Fea as the most appropriate heir. This arrangement suited Gavin just fine, as it left him free to continue gambling, drinking, and whoring his way through the less reputable taverns of Waterdeep.
Following the misfortunes that befell his family, Thesp Eltorchul quickly realized the need to rebuild his station and increase the status of the Eltorchul family in the city. Relying on the Eltorchuls’ chosen trades, he opened the doors of Eltorchul Academy to more students, increased magic research funding, and offered commissions to adventurers willing to go out into the realms and acquire exotic and powerful magical items.
Gavin Eltorchul realized that this was his opportunity to test his mettle, and desired to collect both finder’s fees and tales from abroad. He sold some of his properties to prepare for the journey, then set out at once. While his mother disapproved, his father was secretly pleased that his third child had finally decided to attempt something productive.
Gavin’s travels brought him to the Land of Intrigue, and he first traveled as far as Calimport, where in his naivety, he was quickly robbed of his gold. He hastily traveled back to Amn and found himself in Athkatla. After a few drunken altercations, he wisely decided to conceal his developing arcane abilities. He found work for a time at the Happy Hero tavern, and enjoyed some success there. Gavin’s intent was to earn enough to continue his journey, although his penchant for gambling made it difficult. He was greatly lauded at the Happy Hero until a more skilled bard arrived, with tales from the Chondalwood and beyond.
Gavin’s competition, a man named Ptolemy, arrived in Athkatla. As a fellow bard, Gavin bore no grudges to the man, and even drank in the Happy Hero listening to the other bard’s performances. He later fell in with the new party the older man had organized, and became his pupil, training in both martial and melodic arts. However, after an adventure that found his mentor’s body smashed to a pulp by the fist of an ogre zombie, he fell into his new role as the party bard.
After fighting their way through the tomb of the Forgotten King Theron and defeating Krootad, the spirit of King Theron arose, and presented Gavin with his legendary sword, Merthuvial. In return, Gavin promised to spread the tale of King Theron, and seek a warrior more worthy of bearing the great longsword into battle.
He is attracted to new and interesting things, and is full of confidence. He considers martial prowess and bardic development two sides of the same goal. He likes to win, and will take underhanded actions to do so, but he is good at heart. Others may not approve of his lifestyle, but he would sacrifice much to help friends in need, even if he will not admit that to himself.
